Hot on the heels of Ferrari's 458 Challenge race car comes the 458 Grand Am, destined for the North American Grand Am series in 2012.

Making its public debut at Ferrari's Fiorano test track this week, the 458 Grand Am is powered by a detuned version of the car's regular 425kW V8, thanks to series regulations requiring an output of 500 horsepower (373kW).

The 458 Grand Am is the work of Ferrari racing partner Michelotto and features a unique racing kit that includes a huge rear wing, stronger suspension, a beefier roll cage, uprated brakes (forget ABS and traction control) and revised track-specific body components.

The new Ferrari race car will compete in the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class, where it will take on the likes of Porsche's 911 GT3 - with 38 combined class wins to its name.
