The Federal Government has awarded Mercedes-Benz the contract to supply high-security vehicles for the upcoming G20 summit in Brisbane.
The German carmaker will supply 16 of its recently-unveiled S 600 Guard limousines for the protection of the event's visiting heads of state and dignitaries.
But rather than purchase the fleet - which would have cost a minimum of around AU$650,000 each - the government will instead lease the 16 vehicles before and during the summit at a cost of AU$1.8 million.
While the base-spec S 600 Guard is hardly 'basic', the options list is enormous and includes features likely to be fitted to the leased vehicles.
For example, a chauffeur package, rear executive seat, rear ‘business console’ (available with or without telephone) and an ‘air-balance’ package that filters and fragrances the air are just some of the options available.
There’s also a panic alarm, emergency fresh-air system to combat harmful gasses or smoke and a ‘warmth comfort package’ that “warms all surfaces the occupants might come into contact with”.
Probably won’t need that last feature in Brisbane during November…
