The replacement for Ferrari’s ‘entry level’ California will be more performance-focused, according to a new report.

US magazine Car & Driver reports that the convertible's successor will be more powerful and lighter than the current model’s 365kW output and 1735kg kerb weight.

If the information is reliable, key to this ambition will apparently be a new twin-turbocharged V8 engine, with a lighter aluminium and carbon-fibre chassis.

Despite this weight-reduction strategy, the California’s folding hardtop is expected to remain.

The new engine is tipped to find its way into other Fiat Group models, with Maserati and Alfa Romeo being the most likely candidates.

Also expected is a version of the KERS hybrid system, set to appear in the flagship Enzo replacement later this year.

The lines of the new car are expected to draw on more retro themes than the California. Ferrari Centro Stile, with help from Pininfarina are chalking-out the redesign.

Ferrari updated the existing California for 2012, with improvements to weight and power, so the all-new model is expected to be at least two years away.
