Fan footage has emerged of Jules Bianchi's horror crash on lap 44 of the rain-soaked Japanese Grand Prix

The footage shows Bianchi's car aquaplaning off the track into a tractor being used to lift Sauber driver Adrian Sutil's car from the circuit; Sutil had crashed on the same corner two laps earlier.

Bianchi remains in "a serious condition" in hospital. The footage shows that prospects of a recovery would surely seem to be slim.

And it raises questions for the F1 governing body as to why the race was proceeding at the time in such dangerous conditions.

Surely, in our love of motor racing, we've advanced beyond the gladiatorial lust for seeing young lives at the edge.

And that the lives of these young men of astonishing skill and capability are worth more than the spectacle, more than the money, more than the broadcast rights.

A race that should have been stopped, and a negligent F1, are to blame here.
