McLaren F1 and its new engine partner Honda have confirmed that longtime pilot Jenson Button will stay on in 2015, partnering the incoming Fernando Alonso.

Alonso, who has lately struggled to find victory with the legendary Ferrari team, had already been expected to return to McLaren, but rumours had suggested Button would be replaced by Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen.

Today’s announcement means that Magnussen will stay on as reserve driver, with Button now continuing beyond the 268th race this year that was believed to be his last in F1.

Button spared a thought for Magnussen, however.

"I am very glad that Kevin will remain part of the team," he said.  "He is a very quick driver and a really nice guy."
