Evo Evolved: Mitsubishi Teases e-Evolution SUV Concept For Tokyo

Mitsubishi’s iconic Evolution badge is set to return, attached to the brand’s first concept since joining the Renault Nissan Alliance last year - but this time the Evo tag won’t be applied to a go-fast version of the Lancer.

Officially called the e-Evolution Concept, the new take on the famous nameplate will be applied to a vehicle Mitsubishi describes as a “low slung aerodynamic SUV coupe”, a move which takes its precedent from the rally-ready Pajero Evolution of the late 1990s.

The Japanese automaker is playing its cards close to its chest at this early stage, although specific mentions have been made of the e-Evolution concept’s blend of a high performance four-wheel drive system and electric powertrain.

The Tokyo Motor Show is also being branded by Mitsubishi as a show like no other before, with the brand set to reveal details of its long-term vision as part of the newly-formed Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, with a focus on sustainable growth and development.

As for the e-Evolution Concept itself, Mitsubishi has issued a single shadowy teaser image to build anticipation, and while most details are obscured the preview shows what appears to be a heavily sculpted five-door form (with barely visible rear door cut lines), a split buttress-style C-pillar, with a sharply angular LED taillights and shallow rear windscreen that puts style ahead of versatility.

No details of the electric powertrain have been leaked yet, but expect more information and additional images to surface ahead of the concept’s Tokyo Motor Show debut in late October.
