The 2015 European Car Of The Year (ECOTY) shortlist has been announced, with BMW taking pre-award honours by having four of its models recognised.

The 2 Series, 2 Series Active Tourer, X4 SUV and i8 electric sports car have all made the cut for the 2015 ECOTY award, while Mercedes-Benz and Nissan are also well represented with three nominations each.

In all, 33 models have made the shortlist at this stage, but as the list won’t be finalised until December 1, carmakers with new models imminent may yet make the cut.

That final list will be whittled down to seven by the middle of December, with the 2015 ECOTY winner announced ahead of next year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Citroen’s C1 and C4 Cactus are in the running, while Ford also has two chances for ECOTY glory with its EcoSport SUV and midsized Mondeo range.

Despite the paint having barely dried on its all-new models, both the Smart ForTwo and ForFour have made the cut along with the recently-revealed Volkswagen Passat.

To be eligible for the award, a model must be new in the voting-year (in this case, 2015), and be available to purchase in at least five European countries.

Peugeot's 308 picked up the award for 2014, while the Volkswagen Golf took the ECOTY in 2013.

The 2015 ECOTY winner is due to be revealed on March 2, with the Geneva Motor Show to begin the following day.
