Brabus has a new model ready for an official debut at the Dubai Motor Show, and it’s a three-cylinder city car with small wheels that’s barely noticeable.

We joke, of course, because the German performance tuner is usually famous for taking the ‘best-of-‘Benz’ and dialling up the insanity factor to eleven.

And this new model - the Rocket 900 Desert Gold Edition - is no exception, with a full 662kW (or 900 BHP, hence the name) awaiting the cautious jab of the driver’s right foot.

There’s a stump-pulling 1500Nm at the peak as well, but this is electronically limited to 1200Nm, and should the driver be game enough to plant the right foot and hold it there, the top speed will exceed 350km/h.

On the way to 350km/h plus, the Desert Gold will hit 100km/h in 3.7 seconds and 200km/h in just 9.1 seconds.

The engine is a twin-turbocharged V12 petrol powerplant, with capacity increased to 6.3 litres (having started life as a 5.5 litre unit, says Brabus).

A seven-speed Brabus-tuned automatic is tasked with channelling the power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential, and aluminium paddle shifters are available to the driver.

Brabus has based its fuel economy figures on the Mercedes-AMG S 65 sedan upon which the Rocket 900 is based, stating an unlikely 11.9 l/100km on the combined cycle.

Beyond the internals under the bonnet, the Desert Gold sports a special paint finish of the same name, Brabus carbon-fibre aerodynamic add-ons and 21-inch black alloy wheels with gold pin-striping.

There’s a gold rush on the inside as well, with no less than 300 parts getting the same Desert Gold shade as the exterior.

Launching a “Desert Edition” at the Dubai Motor Show is no accident, as Brabus has both a company branch and a “flagship store” in Dubai.
