The first new model from British startup David Brown Automotive has been revealed this week, in the form of the retro-styled Speedback.

Inspired largely by the legendary Aston Martin DB5, entrepreneur David Brown says his Speedback also takes cues from the early Ferrari and Maserati lines.

Based on Jaguar’s soon to be retired XKR, the Speedback has been completely reimagined to deliver on a simple mission: classic looks, modern technology.

“I wanted all the impact and style of a classic sports car, but with modern capabilities and conveniences. This is what I want in a car, but it’s not something anyone really offers. So, I’ve created it myself,” Brown said.

Powering the ‘new’ coupe is Jaguar’s 5.0 litre V8 engine, producing 375kW and 625Nm of torque.

Motivation goes to the rear wheels through a six-speed auto, and Brown promises a 0-100km/h time of just 4.8 seconds. Top speed is listed at 250km/h.

The Speedback is an entirely hand-crafted affair, inside and out, and the cabin boasts everything that you’d expect from a classic delight. There’s leather everywhere, along with wood and aluminium highlights.

Brown expects to build no more than 50 Speedbacks each year, although the wealthy Brit has yet to confirm a price - or whether it will be available to international buyers.

Incidentally, this David Brown is no relation to the man of Aston Martin fame - but it’s a convenient name, to be sure.
