Daihatsu might never return to the Australian market, but its contributions to Toyota's bottom line remain strong in overseas markets.

Earlier this year, Japan's oldest car manufacturer revealed the A-Concept city car concept, destined for a production debut in the South-East Asian arena. This week it's pulled out a more inventive concept: the D-X.

As a Roadster, the D-X looks like a rugged and mutated version of the tiny 2002 Copen. This concept is more than meets the eye however, because the D-X is something of a Transformer.

It won't switch itself into a robot and save the world, but thanks to its resin body design, the D-X's shell-like top section can be switched out for a selection of other styles.

If a sleek panel van is more your style, or a two-door off-roading look is preferred, the D-X will make it happen.

Whether Daihatsu will put its quirky pick-a-part concept into production is unclear, but for now, it might be better suited to a partnership with Bandai toys.
