A conscious and waving Mark Webber has been hospitalised after a crash in the last minutes of this year’s World Endurance Championship finale at Interlagos.

The Australian racer,, formerly a driver with F1 team Red Bull, defected to endurance racing at the end of 2013 to begin a new career with the Porsche LMP1 team.

Reports today suggest Webber lost control of his 919 Hybrid racing car, striking the AF Corse Ferrari of Matteo Cressoni and sending both racers into an outside barrier.

While Cressoni emerged from the incident on his own two feet, Webber’s Porsche had continued after the initial barrier impact, hitting the opposite armco at great enough speed to demolish the rear of his car.

Webber was taken from the site by stretcher to a local hospital, where he was joined by Cressoni. Both will spend the night for observation, and Webber is understood to be conscious and taking visitors.

“Mark Webber is in good condition, according to the first information from the doctors,” Porsche LMP1 boss Fritz Enzinger said earlier.
