Classic Le Mans Ferrari Sells For $12m

Once again, RM Auctions has sold a classic sports car for a number that has more zeroes in it than Celebrity Apprentice.

The auction took place on the same weekend as the 2013 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa D'Este and featured a number of Ferraris including a 288 GTO, Enzo and a 599XX that you're not allowed to take home.

A British collector did get to take home a classic Ferrari, however he had to pay €9.856 million (over $13,000,000) for the privilege.

The car is a Ferrari 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione which ran in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Ferrari is powered by a 4.5 litre V12 good for 340bhp (248kW), mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The engine is fed by three Weber carburettors, propelling it to 291km/h and then brought to halt by drum brakes all round.

Underneath the stunning Pininfarina bodywork is a tubular steel frame, cradling the engine and transmission up front.

The car wore the number 14 for the race and was driven by Mike Hawthorn and Giuseppe "Nino" Farina. The car was kicked out of the results after the pit crew topped up the brake fluid before the 28th lap.

Fluids of any kind could not be added to a competing car before lap 28. The race was won by a Jaguar XK-120C.

The MM was then sold off in 1954 to Luigi Chinetti, a privateer racer and the first US Ferrari dealer.
