The Summernats Citycruise public street parade is set to return in January, marking the official opening of the 26th running of the Summernats car festival in Canberra.

This will be the second running of the public Citycruise event, which is expected to see more than 200 modified street machines parade down Canberra’s main drag, Northbourne Avenue.

The first Citycruise opened the 2012 event in January, marking the first Summernats public event since the former Supercruise event was banned after 1992.

This final public Supercruise was marred by drunken rioting, forcing the Supercuise to be held within the grounds of the event’s main venue, Exhibition Park, ever since.

The 2012 Citycruise’s shift to a daylight schedule, held on Thursday ahead of the Summernats’ main Exhibition Park events ensured a trouble free event, attracting an estimated 20,000-strong crowd along the route.

“The Citycruise is the perfect opportunity for families and workers in Canberra to come out and look at some of Australia’s finest street machines, hot rods and custom cars in action”, Summernats organiser Andy Lopez said.
