The days are numbered for diesel vans in the CBDs of major European cities, so news of Citroen’s E-Berlingo Multispace electric vehicle is no real surprise.
The Multispace is a five-seat version (note the side windows) of the existing Berlingo electric delivery van.
And with 675-litres of cargo space (3,000-litres if you fold the seats away) – the Multispace presents a practical zero-emissions solution to the needs of many private buyers and commercial fleet operators.
Power comes from a 50kW/200Nm electric motor propelled from two 22.5kWh battery packs mounted either side of the rear axle. Citroen claims the E-Berlingo Multispace can deliver a range between battery re-charges of 170kms.
And, as it is suitable for D/C fast charging –assuming you can find a rapid charging facility – a 50 per-cent charge can be achieved in 15 minutes or 80 per-cent in 30 minutes. Plug it in at home using the old three-point plug and you’ll need 10 hours for a complete re-charge.
Smart technology inside too – you can use a smartphone app to facilitate remote heating or cooling of your Citroen E-Berlingo Multispace (or check the battery charge level). There is also a seven-inch screen for the infotainment system (with satellite navigation) plus smartphone, Bluetooth and MirrorLink connectivity.
In Australia, Renault has had some of its Renault Kangoo ZE delivery vans on trial with Australia Post and this has sparked interest from the likes of local councils.
So perhaps there is a local sales opportunity for electric vans from Citroen. Certainly electric vehicles for Sydney City Council would seem to tick a lot of boxes for Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
