Mystery no longer, Citroen has revealed its newest concept, and possibly previewed the next model in its upmarket DS range.
Dubbed Numero 9, the new concept may not carry the DS prefix in its name, but it does wear the badge - and unique low-slung styling.
Citroen describes the Numero 9 as a "new take on the shooting brake body style," combining the proportions of a wagon with the style of a fastback five-door and the dimensions of a large executive car.
Whether the Numero 9 is a direct preview of a new flagship in the DS line remains to be seen, but combined with the earlier sedan-styled Metropolis concept, it is clear that Citroen is pushing a specific plan.
In 2010, Peugeot Citroen design chief Pierre Ploue described a potential flagship based on the then-new Metropolis.
"A large, characterful DS flagship model - we could call it a DS9 to reference the original DS 19 - could do great things for us," Ploue told the magazine.
For now, Citroen has confirmed only that the face of the Numero 9 represents "the new front-end identity of future models".
All-wheel-drive power for the Numero 9 is provided by plug-in hybrid system that pairs a 52kW/200Nm electric motor on the rear axle with Peugeot Citroen's familiar 1.6 litre petrol engine, adding a further 165kW and 275Nm.
In all-electric mode, Citroen promises a driving range of around 50 kilometres. Overall fuel consumption is listed at just 1.7 l/100km.
With both powerplants combined, the concept's 0-100km/h time is claimed to be an impressive 5.4 seconds; and, covering the kilometre from standstill is an equally impressive 25.3 seconds.
