It's lower, fatter, and, we imagine, a good bit faster. This is Citroen's DS 4R, the new performance champion in the brand's upmarket DS4 family.

Technical details for the new model have yet to be revealed however, and these new leaked images come courtesy of enthusiast website autoforum.cz.

If the smaller DS3 Racing (which we don't get in Australia) is anything to go by, the DS4-based DS 4R could deliver a Golf GTI-rivalling 155kW and 275Nm of torque.

The flagship in the current DS4 line-up is driven by the same BMW- and Peugeot Citroen-developed 1.6 litre turbocharged engine, but offers a slightly lower 147kW output.

In DS 4R form, Citroen's in-house Racing division could conceivably screw a little more power from the engine, although it is unlikely that it has much more to offer.

As with the DS3 Racing, expect the DS 4R to feature faster steering response, sharper springs and shocks, and - as the snap-on guards suggest - a wider track.

A Geneva Motor Show unveiling for the DS 4R is likely - watch this space for more details.
