The latest offering in Citroen's upmarket DS range, the high-riding DS4, is now on sale in Australia, arriving ahead of the DS5 people-mover due later this year.

The DS4 range kicks off at $35,990 and tops out at $39,990 for the hero DSport, taking on compact crossovers like MINI's Countryman and small premium cars like the BMW 1 Series.

Citroen Australia boss Miles Williams says the DS4 was developed to rival crossovers and small cars alike.

“Until now, the cross over term has been used to describe cars that sit between a four wheel drive and a normal car," Williams said.

"The DS4 is a cross over between different types of cars, bringing the benefits of each car type and eliminating the negatives to produce a new style of car."

Mechanical

In Australia, the DS4 will be offered with three Euro 5-compliant engine options, including two turbocharged petrol units and a single entry-level diesel.

Opening the range are the DS4 DStyle variants. The diesel model is powered by Peugeot-Citroen's 82kW and 270Nm four-cylinder turbodiesel, mated to a six-speed EGS 'automated manual' transmission.

Fuel consumption figures for the diesel are listed at 4.4 l/100km on the combined cycle, with the 0-100km/h run covered in a leisurely 12.4 seconds.

In petrol form, the DS4 DStyle gets the same six-speed EGS and is driven by the familiar 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 115kW and 240Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption is listed at 6.5 l/100km on the combined cycle; Citroen says it will hit the 100km/h mark in 9.9 seconds.

Topping the DS4 trio is the DSport variant, motivated by the same turbo-charged 1.6 litre engine that drives the Peugeot RCZ flagship (among others), delivering 147kW and 275Nm

Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, fuel consumption for the top-shelf DSport is listed at 6.4 l/100km. Citroen promises a 0-100km/h time of 8.4 seconds.

The DS4's suspension package includes MacPherson type struts at the front and a flexible transverse beam at the rear.

The braking package includes 302x26mm and 268x12mm discs (front/rear) for the petrol DStyle, 283x26mm/268x12mm for the diesel DStyle, and larger 340x30/290x12mm discs for the DSport variant.

Features

Based on the new Citroen C4, the DS4 measures 4275mm long, 1810mm wide and 1533mm tall, making it wider and taller, but shorter end-to-end, than its small-car sibling.

Storage space in the rear measures 359 litres with the rear seats up, and when fitted with the EGS transmission, a cooled storage compartment is featured up front with room for four 500ml bottles.

Features across the range include automatic dual-zone climate control, Denon surround-sound audio, Bluetooth, USB and 3.5mm auxiliary connectivity.

Electric folding and heated door mirrors are available, along with automatic electric parking brake and hill-start assist, and  front and rear parking sensors.

Standard safety features across the range include six airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, ABS with electronic brake-force distribution and emergency brake assist, cruise control with speed-limiter and a blind-spot monitoring system.
