An Audi A1-rivalling light car could soon join Citroen's upmarket DS range, according to reports out of Europe this week.

Citroen's DS cars have progressively become larger with each new model, kicking off with the DS3 small hatch, followed later by the high-riding DS4 and finally the recent DS5 wagon

Now, a report in Germany's Auto Bild magazine suggests that the DSiblings will welcome a new DS1-badged light car at the bottom end of the range.

The report points to a Geneva Motor Show debut in March, and if Citroen's past new-car campaigns are anything to go by, we should begin seeing (tedious) teaser images and clips early in the new year.

The DS1 would likely share its platform with the next-generation Citroen C1 (the current model is offered in Europe only).

The report adds that sources have revealed a 3.6 metre overall length, making it shorter even than the 3964mm Audi A1.

Citroen could also look to its engine-sharing arrangement with BMW to pick up the German carmaker's new three-cylinder engines, including a 74kW entry-level option and a range-topping 96kW GTi.

If the reports prove accurate, watch for more details to surface in the coming weeks.
