Citroen has released new details for the first SUV in its upmarket DS range, the Wild Rubis.

Unveiled as a concept at the Shanghai Auto Show this week, the DS Wild Rubis is expected to enter as a new flagship above the current DS5 wagon.

Unlike the existing DS models however, the Wild Rubis is the first to do away with any visual reference to its parent marque, dropping the familiar chevron design from its grille.

Although a small change, the move is significant: by separating the DS badge from the volume-focused Citroen brand, the French carmaker has signalled its intention to take the badge further upmarket.

PSA Peugeot Citroen is perhaps preparing to create a distinct new premium brand (apeing the creation of Lexus, the prestige arm of Japanese carmaker Toyota).

With the midsized DS Wild Rubis, the carmaker will take on the likes of the Lexus RX, BMW X3, Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK.

In concept form, the Wild Rubis is powered by PSA's familiar 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine, producing 167kW. There's also an electric motor on-board, providing 52kW of power for the rear axle.

As with some other recent concepts from rival brands, the Wild Rubis' electric motor can drive the car on its own, offering an electric-only range of around 50km.

The layout also means that an all-wheel-drive configuration is available, with the front wheels driven by the petrol engine and the rear wheels turned by the electric motor.

Citroen has yet to confirm production plans for the Wild Rubis, but its market-friendly styling suggests that a showroom debut will not be far away.
