Chinese carmaker GAC will appear at this month’s Detroit Auto Show with a new ‘high-performance’ SUV, dubbed ‘GS4’

GAC last showcased its brand in Detroit back in 2013, when it unveiled the Mercedes-like E-Jet, a plug-in hybrid concept.

The company’s latest offering, the GS4, promises to be a “high-performance compact sport-utility vehicle”.

GAC’s definition of such terms may prove to be as loose as the now Chinese-owned MG’s take on the ‘GTS’ badge, however, with power in the GS4 provided by a choice of 1.3 or 1.5 litre turbocharged engines.

Power figures are still to be revealed, but it appears likely that, in China at least, the concept of ‘high performance’ is about to be redefined.

"The debut of GS4 at the North American International Auto Show will mark a milestone in GAC Motor's history because it shows that our products have met the international standards."

"The high-performance SUV is indeed a representative of Chinese brand vehicles which are able to compete in the global market," Wu Song, GAC's general director, said.

The GS4 is expected to go on sale in China later this year, along with markets in the Middle East and South America.
