GM has released new details for its upcoming Chevrolet Spark EV, a new electric vehicle based on the petrol-powered hatch we know as the Holden Barina Spark.

Revealed earlier this month, the Spark EV has been undergoing tests with a 45kW electric motor. Today, GM has confirmed that the small EV will debut instead with a more powerful 85kW motor.

To put that in perspective, the Spark EV will offer even more power than the Australian-delivered petrol-powered Barina Spark - its 1.2 litre petrol engine delivers 59kW.

GM promises a driving range of around 130km off one charge.

"Electric motor development and manufacturing is another area of expertise we'll need as we expand vehicle electrification technologies to address the needs of our customers around the world," Larry Nitz, GM executive director of Vehicle Electrification Engineering said.

While the Spark EV will enter production for the US market in late 2012, a global debut has yet to be confirmed.

With Mitsubishi's i-MiEV now on sale to the Australian public, Nissan's Leaf due next year and the Renault Fluence ZE also on the cards, the Spark EV might not be too far from our shores.
