Chevrolet will reportedly unveil a new concept at this week’s Detroit Auto Show, previewing a future Tesla Model 3 rival.

Both The Detroit News and The Wall Street Journal have quoted anonymous sources, reporting that the new concept will join its larger sibling in the all-new Volt at the motor show wearing an appropriate name: Bolt.

The Bolt is believed to be a small, all-electric five-door hatch with a range of around 320km and a starting price of US$30,000 in the US for the production version; when it arrives.

That puts it squarely in the court of the upcoming Tesla Model 3, which is believed to be targeting a similar starting price and range as Tesla’s first ‘people’s car’.

But the report predicts the Bolt could be in US showrooms as soon as 18 months from now as a 2017 model, meaning it will almost certainly beat the Model 3 to market as Tesla’s current priority is its Model X SUV.

Also in the Bolt’s sights would be the updated Nissan Leaf, which at this stage, could fall well short of the Bolt and Model 3’s 320km range if early predictions are accurate.
