There's still no solid word on what will be Holden's next RWD performance car, but as long as the Chevrolet Camaro remains on that list of candidates, we'll continue to look jealously across the Pacific at the tastier versions of GM's two-door hotrod.
One of those variants is the Camaro 1LE performance package, which has been confirmed to return for 2017 in the USA, with - for the first time in the 1LE badge's 27-year history - the availability of a 250kW six-cylinder version alongside the V8.
The 1LE pack is more than just stickers and styling.
Pitched at enthusiasts who might venture out to the occasional track day, the 1LE performance pack for the Camaro LT V6 brings a mechanical limited-slip differential, upgraded radiator, differential and transmission coolers, a suede steering wheel, four-piston Brembo front brakes, short-throw shifter for manual models, bimodal exhaust, a satin black bonnet, a front splitter and three-piece rear spoiler.
The V6 also adopts the FE3 suspension hardware from the Camaro SS, plus 20-inch alloy wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber. Recaro front seats and a video/datalogging device taken from the new Corvette are optional extras.
Step into the 340kW V8-powered Camaro SS 1LE, and the Recaro front seats become standard, the Brembo front calipers are upgraded to six-piston items and grip two-piece rotors.
Magnetic Ride Control replaces the standard suspension and fat Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tyres are wrapped around a set of 20-inch forged alloy wheels measuring a colossal 305mm wide at the back.
There are no power upgrades, but the extra mechanical grip from the suspension, tyres and brakes - plus the extra downforce from the upgraded aero package - enhances handling to a level well above a standard Camaro.
Around the 4.02km Willow Springs "Big Willow" circuit, it adds up to a three-second time advantage. If you're a track hound, you'll know that three seconds around a four-kilometre race track is a significant gain in performance.
The 1LE package will be available later this year, but unless the Camaro gets the nod for our market it will likely continue to be a US exclusive. Shame, that.
