Cadillac ELR: The Volt’s Upmarket Cousin Bound For Detroit Debut

Cadillac's electrified Converj concept, revealed in 2009 and forced by the GFC onto the backburner, is on its way to production.

Renamed ELR, the concept was refined and 'revealed' a second time last year. Now, GM has confirmed it will unveil the Volt-based production car in Detroit next month. 

While the ELR shares much of its architecture and drivetrain with the Holden Volt extended-range electric vehicle, this 'Caddy' is more of a lifestyle offering than a new-age family car. 

Details fo the production model are thin on the ground, although it is expected the ELR will retain the Volt's petrol-assisted electric drivetrain, although a more powerful and performance-oriented battery is likely.

On the styling front, the teaser image released today suggests the ELR will retain much of its concept styling, although a more slender C-pillar and smaller tail-lights stand out as clear changes.

Reports suggest the ELR will also get a more powerful petrol engine, replacing the Volt's 1.4 litre unit with either a 1.6 or 1.8 litre option.

The Detroit Auto Show opens on January 14.
