Cadillac has teased its upcoming ELR plug-in hybrid model with a new image of a disguised development mule, ahead of its official unveiling at next week’s Detroit Auto Show.

Disappointingly this latest teaser is less-informative than the earlier shot released in December, which confirmed the production model’s coupe styling will remain close to the ELR-inspiring Converj concept from 2009.

Based on the acclaimed Chevrolet/Holden Volt PHEV, the production ELR is expected to eschew the Volt’s focus on ultra-efficiency  in favour of a greater emphasis on luxury.

While this shift will likely result in a car that's substantially heavier than the Volt’s 1721kg kerb weight, the ELR’s potentially more aerodynamic coupe bodystyle could aid its open-road energy efficiency.

Performance-boosting drivetrain upgrades are also rumoured, but so far Cadillac has stayed mum on specific details.

"Cadillac customers are going to enjoy the unique features ELR will bring to the market," ELR Chief Engineer Chris Thomason said.

"We’re going to change the way people think about luxury and electrification."

These unique features will all be revealed at next week’s Detroit unveiling, so keep an eye on TMR on January 15 to find out just what Cadillac has in store.
