Buick has already confirmed the Chinese-sourced Envision SUV as one of its headline acts, but talk of a sporty two door, built on a rear wheel drive chassis, has reached a fever pitch.
While it will likely only be a concept, and not a surprise production vehicle, the Buick coupe will sit atop General Motor’s Alpha platform, the same rear wheel drive chassis as used beneath the Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac ATS and CTS.
It should match the Camaro for size, but don’t expect a rebadging exercise like GM of yore, the Buick coupe will offer entirely unique sheetmetal more closely linked to the recently unveiled LaCrosse, giving it a dramatically different look to the aggressive Camaro.
The goal of a new coupe is to revive the luxury brand’s fortunes in North America, while Buick enjoys huge success in China, US buyers have been slower to warm to the ‘new Buick’ with a lingering sentiment of the brand being better suited to retirees.
While the coupe’s underpinnings will be shared with Camaro and Cadillac ATS, the V8 engine of the Camaro SS will likely make way for the twin-turbo V6 borrowed from the Cadillac ATS-V. While final outputs are yet to be revealed the ATS-V is capable of throwing down 346kW.
Buick and Opel’s twinned model ranges also spell out a faint hope that a production version of the new coupe could have a global reach beyond China and North America.
If that’s the case Holden’s oft-promised rear wheel drive performace flagship to take over from the Commodore SS may not be the Camaro at all, but this car - with the Opel-Buick styling likely to be a better fit amongst Holden’s Euro-sourced future line-up.
That said, Buick’s previous form with the Velite roadster in 2004, as well as Riviera coupe concepts in 2007 and 2013, none of which enjoyed a production future, means that buyers finally hoping for a rear-wheel-drive buick might be hesitant to bank on a production future.
