Buick's all-new Encore compact SUV has made its Detroit Auto Show debut this week, arriving after a month of teaser images and drip-fed details.

Continuing its platform sharing programme with GM stablemate Opel, Buick's Encore is built on the same architecture that underpins the brand-new Opel Mokka (and the Holden Barina), carrying over much of its styling also.

Unique to the Encore is Buick's familiar "waterfall" grille, along with a number of minor differences to the headlight and bumper designs.

Power for the new CUV is provided by GM's turbocharged 1.4 litre petrol engine, producing 111kW and 189Nm of torque.

Motivation is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, with a steep first gear and tall overdrive gear providing a little more guts in acceleration, and better fuel consumption at cruising speeds.

Fuel consumption figures have yet to be released, however.

Depending on the variant, features include dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, a Bose stereo, a heated and leather-trimmed steering wheel, power-adjusted driver’s seat, reversing camera, and an active noise-canceling sound system.

Despite its Nissan Juke sizing, as GM's near-prestige brand (below Cadillac), Buick will aim the Encore at buyers of BMW's X1 and the new Audi Q3 crossover.

Australia

Buick has no Australian presence, and with Opel on the way, it's unlikely we'll ever see Buick here.

Don't hold your breath for the Encore, but Opel's Mokka could prove an appealing (and more affordable) alternative to the BMW X1 and the MINI Countryman if brought to Australia.
