Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport Gets 895kW, Records 431km/h At VW Proving Grounds

If the 747kW asphalt-eating W16 of the 'regular' Veyron somehow wasn't enough, Bugatti has this week announced the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport - the world's first orange and carbon-black nuclear weapon.

Powered by an 895kW/1500Nm version of the Veyron's 16-cylinder turbocharged heart, the 16.4 Super Sport offers an electronically-limited top speed of 415km/h.

Despite the production model's official top speed, an outing at Volkswagen's proving grounds this week saw the super Veyron record a Guinness World Book-measured 431km/h 'average top speed'.

"In the presence of the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) and a representative of Guinness Book of Records the Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 431.07 km/h," Veyron Chief Engineer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber said.

"We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h, but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more."

Among the Super Sport's upgrades are even bigger turbochargers, and a larger intercooler. The suspension package has also been modified, getting a moderately raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilisers and tougher shock absorbers.

Outside, the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport gets a unique carbon-fibre and orange paint scheme (although an entirely clear-lacquered exposed carbon-fibre finish is available), two NACA ducts in the roof, enlarged front intakes and a new rear bumper with a double diffuser - completed with a new centre-mounted exhaust outlet.

Sadly, Bugatti has not revealed the Super Sport's 0-100km/h time. Of course, while most owners of the limited Super Sport may never see a third of its top speed, attempts at discovering its best acceleration times may yield an even more mind-bending result than the regular model's face-melting 2.5 second sprint.

The exact number of 16.4 Super Sports to be built has also not been revealed, although Bugatti says the first five units will form a special limited series of their own.
