On the eve of a Driverless Vehicle Conference in Adelaide, Bosch Australia boss Gavin Smith has called for the technology to be fast-tracked.

Speaking at the Australasian Road Safety Conference on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Mr Smith said autonomous cars have the ability to dramatically reduce the road toll.

Removing the human element from decision making behind the wheel, Smith said, has the potential to better the likes of ABS or ESC as one of the single biggest leaps forward in road safety.

Smith said more than 90 percent of collisions are caused by human error, singling out pedestrian fatalities as incidents that could be prevented by technology such as Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Predicting movement in pedestrians, cyclists and animals was viewed as the next challenge for autonomous technology, but Bosch believes its devices are already ahead of the curve in this regard.
