Borgward’s first model in more than fifty years has been confirmed as an SUV, with an unveiling scheduled for this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

In March, the reborn carmaker suggested an SUV would be its comeback model in an attempt to chalk up immediate sales to build the budget for future projects.

With the SUV confirmed, Borgward is hoping to capitalise on the current popularity of the segment and has mooted an early-2016 date to bring the model to market.

Exactly which markets will be included in the 2016 launch is unclear, but China could be among the first to see the new model.

Borgward has signed ex-Daimler China boss Ulrich Walker, hinting at a Chinese presence for the carmaker in some capacity, and a link with Chinese carmaker Foton furthers this suggestion.

Early sales success in China could pave the way for an expansion into other markets, or could accelerate the development of other Borgward models.
