BMW has all-but announced the coming of a new medium SUV, with CEO Norbert Reithofer confirming production plans to the German press this week.

Speaking with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, Reithofer said that the new model, dubbed X4, will be positioned between the X3 and the X5

He added that the X4 will be around the same length as the current X3 (likely sharing its platform) and will utilise the same four- and six-cylinder engine options.

As with the X6, we can likely expect an M-badged variant to appear in the X4 line-up also.

Reithofer did not offer details on the new model's design, but it is likely that the X4 will follow in the footsteps of the X6, bringing a more sporting face and coupe-like profile to the medium SUV segment.

The X6 has proven a strong seller for BMW, and it is likely this fact - along with the forthcoming arrival of Porsche's small Cajun SUV - that has motivated development of a sports-focused X4 SUV.
