The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has announced 5-Star crash safety ratings for the new BMW X3 SUV and the new Audi A6 large sedan and Avant wagon

The scores are the result of testing carried out by ANCAP's European sister program, Euro NCAP.

The new Nissan Micra has achieved a 4-Star rating, with the passenger compartment maintaining its shape well in front impact tests.

Geely's MK small car achieved a 3-Star safety rating, while the updated Mahindra Pik-up (which has gained dual airbags) achieved only a 2-Star safety rating in local ANCAP tests.

“These results show that, while we are seeing  an increasing number of 5-star vehicles in Australia, there  are  still new cars coming onto the market with considerably lower ratings which provide less crash protection for drivers and passengers,” ANCAP Chair Lauchlan Mr McIntosh said.

“While motorists have a wide range of models available at different pricing points - and at different safety levels irrespective of price - the ANCAP safety assessment is a vital and valuable aid in the selection of a new car.”

The Citroen Berlingo commercial vehicle was awarded a 4-Star rating, as was the Renault Kangoo.
