BMW will reportedly add a new model to its ‘X’ SUV range, to sit between the existing X1 and X3 variants.

Not surprisingly, as the German carmaker moves to fill every possible slot in its line-up, the 2 Series will likely lend itself to a new X2 SUV model.

This isn’t the first time the X2 name has been thrown around, but now the UK’s Autocar quotes unnamed sources as confirming that the new model will go ahead.

One source reportedly said that the first prototype will be ready to undergo testing next month, with the finished product set to go on sale in Europe in 2017.

Furthermore, the X2 could be previewed in concept form as early as next year’s Geneva Motor Show.

In the mean-time, these renderings by independent artist Theo Chin, above and below, offer just one look at what we might see with the final model.

BMW has already trademarked the X2 name, and previous reports suggest a front- and all-wheel-drive layout with a coupe-style body.
