BMW appears closer to offering a new ‘active’ version of its small X1 SUV, with reports this week pointing to the trademarking of a new ‘X2’ badge.

As with other SUV twins in the BMW range - X3 and X4, X5 and X6 - the new X2 is likely to debut as a more coupe-like lifestyle companion to the practical X1.

But, while the current X1 is offered in rear- and all-wheel-drive forms, the new model due in 2015 is expected to follow the 2 Series Active Tourer hatch into front-wheel-drive territory.

The X2 would likely make the same move, with both riding on the new UKL platform that underpins not only the 2AT, but also the new MINI Cooper range.

This will see the new X1 and X2 models become platform mates with the next MINI Countryman and Paceman SUVs, with a number of components likely to be shared across the two lines.
