BMW has previewed a new touchless vehicle user interface system ahead of its public debut at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Called HoloActive Touch, the system is described by its creator as “an innovative operating concept for the interior of the future” under the BMW i Inside Future program.

The ‘Touch’ part of the name refers to HoloActive’s virtual touchscreen, which uses a ‘floating’ hologram operated by the user with finger gestures and commands.

Unlike most touchscreens, however, BMW’s virtual version uses sounds and electronic pulses to give the user the impression that they are pushing ‘real’ buttons.

The technology will eventually combine with BMW’s head-up display and gesture control - the latter already available in the 5 Series and 7 Series - for an experience described by BMW as familiar yet extremely intuitive.

In action, the virtual screen is visible to the driver next to the steering wheel. A camera watches the driver’s hand movements paying particular attention to the finger tips.

BMW has also promised more connected motoring and autonomous technology of the future for visitors to its stand at the 2017 CES. Stay tuned to TMR for more.
