BMW Australia has announced that a small batch of limited edition i8 plug-in hybrid coupes is bound for Australia.
And when BMW says limited, it means limited, with just five units of the Protonic Red Edition making their way here, priced from $299,000 plus on-road costs.
Designed to commemorate the BMW Group’s 100th annivarsary, the cars will arrive finished in Protonic Red metallic, with Frozen Grey highlights, rolling on 20-inch W-spoke alloy wheels.
On the inside Spheric leather trim is offset by red contrasting double stitching, and carbon fibre and black ceramic trims. Special velour and leather floor mats and Protonic Red Edition sill plates round-out the special edition’s features.
“Since its debut, the BMW i8 has stood out from the sports car crowd,” said BMW Australia managing director, Marc Werner.
“The limited-edition Protonic Red Edition is even more exclusive, reinforcing the i8’s unique combination of performance, efficiency and style.”
The rest of the i8 package remains as before, with a 170kW 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine teamed with 96kW synchronous electric motor driving the front axle for a combined 266kW and 570Nm.
Claimed fuel consumption is as low as 2.1 l/100km, but acceleration is rated at an M4-rivalling 4.4 seconds from 0-100km/h - and for zero emissions city cruising the i8 features a 31km electric range.
