The smallest of BMW’s performance models could be given the legendary CSL treatment, with reports out of Germany suggesting that an M2 CSL or GTS is now in development.

The rumours come from German publication Auto Motor Und Sport, claiming that like the M4 GTS, the M2 is about to lose weight and gain a handy dose of power.

The weight-savings are a relatively simple matter, with plenty of extraneous items able to be stripped out of the M2 coupe, including its rear seats, and sound insulation.

Adding more power to the M2’s 272kW and 465Nm 3.0 litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine is less clear-cut.

BMW could potentially offer the full 317kW tune of the regular S55 engine used in the M4, or even the hotter 331kW Competition package.

However, the M2 CSL isn’t expected to tread on the toes of the larger coupe range, meaning the likely option is for it to use a reworked version of its existing N55 engine, revised to mimic the water-cooled intake system of the M4 GTS.

Whatever the engine, if the M2 CSL is headed for production expect a full track package, with wider front and rear tracks, adjustable coil-over suspension, and a more aggressive aerodynamics package.

Some of the M2’s luxury trimmings will go by the wayside, and lighter materials such as aluminium and carbon fibre will take the place of key components to help justify the expected price bump, which like the M4 GTS could see the M2 almost double in price.
