BMW's M Performance division has denied that it is working on a performance version of the mid-engined i8 sports car, with M product boss Cartsten Pries telling the press that a high-performance i8 isn't going to happen.

The rumoured "M8" supercar was expected to ditch the i8's three-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid powerplant for the M5's twin-turbo petrol V8, with a power output in the region of 450kW.

The i8's carbonfibre and aluminium construction would also have kept weight low, giving the M8 the power-to-weight ratio to do battle with true supercars like the McLaren 650S and Lamborghini Huracan.

It would have been the spiritual successor to the BMW M1 of the 1970s, however it appears that we may have to wait before we see the spirit of that mid-engined sports car revived in full M-fashion.

We may not have a long wait though.

BMW will celebrate its centenary in 2016, and the automotive rumourmill says the automaker has something special planned as a birthday present for itself - a mid-engined, twin-turbo V8 supercar, albeit one that won't resemble the ultra-efficient i8.
