The 2012 London Olympics is just around the corner, and as the event's official automotive sponsor, BMW has begun to showcase its own jewels.

Joining its fleet of athlete-shuttling vehicles, BMW will also show off a mildly updated version of its i3 electric vehicle, giving the small city-car concept a subtle interior makeover.

The changes are limited however, made up largely of new trim materials and a new eucalyptus wood dash finish. (See gallery at bottom of article.)

More updates are expected to come when the car enters production in 2013.

The London event will also see the German carmaker show of its new i Pedelec (Pedal Electric) folding bicycle, designed to fit into the rear storage space of the diminutive i3.

Like many new power-assisted bicycles, the i Pedelec features a small electric motor that helps drive the pedals, delivering extra motivation at speeds up to 25km/h.

Although not yet available to buy, BMW says the i Pedelec will offer an assistance range of between 25 to 40 kilometres, depending on the route, the rider's weight and the amount of assistance needed.

BMW has also selected the UK capital to host its first-ever dedicated i store, opening next to the existing BMW Park Lane and MINI Park Lane stores in London.

Set to open its doors in late July, the store will offer buyers a preview of what's to come in the new BMW i range, including the i3 electric car and the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.

Other models in the i family have also been reported, although BMW has yet to confirm plans for an expanded range.

"BMW i Park Lane marks a completely new approach. Situated next to BMW Park Lane and MINI Park Lane, it gives people a perfect opportunity to learn more about electromobility and get close to our future electric and plug-in hybrid BMW i vehicles. This is a further demonstration of our commitment to electromobility," BMW Group board member Ian Robertson said.

In the future, services offered by the BMW i store, and by selected BMW i dealers, will include:

  • Assistance Services. Customers will be able to rely on services such as ConnectedDrive e-remote apps and future roadside services such as mobile recharging equipment
  • Public charging. BMW i will partner with public charging providers in all countries where BMW i models are introduced
  • Home charging with the BMW i Wallbox
  • Flexible mobility solutions. – Customers sometimes have mobility requirements which cannot be completely met by the range of an electric car. In such cases, BMW i will offer mobility options that enable longer distances to be covered – for example, through the loan on such occasions of a BMW powered by a conventional, fuel-efficient combustion engine.
