BMW has used the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como, Italy to debut its new design concept for an upcoming flagship 8-Series coupe.
With the production version scheduled for a 2018 introduction, senior vice president of BMW Design, Adrian van Hooydonk describes the Concept 8-Series as “a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other.”
The large 2+2 coupe presents an update to BMW’s traditional styling themes, leaving elements like the traditional kidney grille (albeit in an enlarged form) and Hoffmeister kick windowline intact, combined with complex new body surfacing, with a deeply sculpted front guard expanding into a wide rear quarter panel and flowing into a surprisingly long rear deck, owing little to the relatively square and simple 8-Series of the 1990s.
At the rear, the 8-Series evokes the style of BMW’s i8 coupe with a single ribbon of LED taillight forming a traditional L-shape from BMW’s other models. Underscoring the new model’s sporting prowess, carbon fibre can be seen in the bodyside vents and rear diffuser.
Designed as a rival to cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe and Bentley Continental the production 8-Series is set to arrive within the next twelve months, meaning only minor changes are expected between this concept and the version available in showrooms.
“The BMW Concept 8-Series is our take on a full-blooded high-end driving machine,” Adrian van Hooydonk, said.
“It is a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other. For me, it’s a slice of pure automotive fascination.”
Inside the Concept 8-Series, BMW has built a cabin that wraps around the driver, trimmed in brown and white leather and suede with a high-set centre console separating driver and passenger.
Aluminium highlights, carbon fibre panelling, and a Swarovski crystal iDrive controller provide the required premium touches to go head-to-head with its ultra-luxury competitors.
