A major breakthrough for BMW’s all-electric ‘i’ sub-brand has been announced with confirmation of 40 charging stations being installed at 10 Westfield Shopping Centres in NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

Owners of any electric vehicle (about 8,000 are currently on Australian roads) can re-charge for free at the BMW/Westfield locations.

And things are moving rapidly, with BMW claiming four charging stations will be operational by March next year at each of the following centres: Westfield Miranda, Bondi Junction, Sydney CBD, Warringah Mall, Carindale, Chermside, Doncaster and Southland.

The ability to re-charge at major destinations like shopping centres (and to do it for free) is a major win for the electric vehicle movement – solutions like this address the one major criticism of these vehicles.
