The BMW Group has won two awards at the SAM Group's annual Sustainability Awards ceremony.
Held in Germany for the first time, BMW took out the Gold Class Status for sustainability and was named Sector Leader in sustainability for automotive companies.
SAM is a Swiss-based sustainability ratings agency, the environmental version of Moody's or S&P. For the awards, SAM analyses 2000 listed companies to deduce which of them is greenest.
Investors use SAM, and companies like it, to inform investment decisions in companies that either are suppliers of sustainability products or to rate a company's performance or capability in that area.
"The BMW Group is a leader in terms of innovation management and has demonstrated a clear commitment to reducing negative environmental impact along the entire value chain," CEO of SAM Group, Michael Baldinger, said.
BMW has long had an interest in sustainability, appointing its first environmental protection officer way back in 1973.
Harald Kruger, a member of BMW Group's board of management, responded to the awards by saying, “For the BMW Group, long-term thinking and taking responsible action along the entire value chain are the basis for economic success."
The SAM Awards join several other in the sustainability trophy cabinet.
For seven years running, BMW has been named Most Sustainable Automotive Company, has been listed on the FTSE4Good index and came first in the 2011 CDP Global 500 ranking.
