BMW’s new M6 GT3 racer has been driven in anger for the first time on Australian soil, with BMW Team SRM completing a test session at Winton in Victoria.

Drivers Steven Richards and Max Twigg each took to the wheel during the two-day test, with the team declaring the outing was “successful”.

The test served as a shakedown for BMW, as the team looks ahead to a full season in the Australian GT Championship.

“Everything has gone unbelievably smoothly,” Richards said.

“The car, in terms of refinement, is just fantastic. We’ve really been able to come to terms with the layout of the cockpit, the way the dashboard works, reading the shift lights, things like that.”

Richards described the M6’s handling as “spot-on”, adding that the test sessions were focused on learning the new car and searching for more speed.

Reliability also looked promising, with the racer handling rural Victoria’s 40-plus degree summer heat without any issues.
BMW Australia CEO, Marc Werner, said the BMW GT3 development program in Germany had produced a solid race car.

Earlier, BMW Team SRM announced it will compete in every round of both the 2016 CAMS Australian GT Championship, and the 2016 CAMS Australian Endurance Championship.

The team also looks to be a likely starter at the 2017 Bathurst 12-Hour.

The M6 GT3 might look somewhat barren at present (see video, below), but the team plans to unveil its paint scheme soon.

The 2016 Australian GT Championship kicks off at the Clipsal 500 event in Adelaide, March 3-6.
