It’s been 30 years since BMW unveiled the first ever M3 - a car that went on to set the benchmark for the high performance medium market.

Originally offered as a coupe, powered by a high-output four-cylinder engine, the M3 has changed over the years to include sedan and convertible versions, as well as six- and eight-cylinder engines.

In its current iteration the M3 is offered as a four-door sedan, powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six that produces 317kW and 550Nm in standard form - a far cry from the original’s 143kW.

To celebrate the M3's 30th birthday, BMW is releasing a limited edition M3 30 Jahre (30 years) edition, finished in Macao Blue - a colour that premiered on the original M3.

Based on the M3 Competition Package, the M3 30 Jarhe punches out 331kW and features Adaptive M suspension with new springs, dampers and stabilisers, Active M differential, plus retuned parameters for the Comfort, Sport, and Sport + drive modes.

To set the 30 Years M3 apart, the special edition rolls on 20-inch “666 M Star” forged alloy wheels (the design of which pays tribute to the original M3 mesh wheels), wrapped in 265/30 R20 front and 285/30 R20 rear tyres.

A “M3 30 Jahre” logo occupies the front guard vents as a unique finishing touch, along with a carbon fibre front splitter, mirror caps, rear spoiler and rear diffuser.

Seatbelts woven with the M stripes, “30 Years” door sill plates, and skeletal design front seats are also part of the 30 Years M3 package, as is a numbered plaque on the carbon fibre interior trim-strip.

This limited edition model will be capped at 500 units worldwide. BMW Australia's General Manager of corporate communications, Lenore Fletcher, told TMR today that "there's no way these vehicles will not be available in Australia," before the end of this year, with timing, pricing, and allocation to be confirmed closer to arrival.
