BMW M3 And M4 Switching To Steel Driveshafts

BMW has announced that the lightweight, carbon driveshafts used in the M3 and M4 performance twins are about to shafted.

The emissions monster continues to work its way through the automotive industry, and the M Division at BMW has been forced to look at ways of accommodating a petrol particulate filter (PPF) - which will soon be required for models to pass ever-stricter emissions requirements.

As such, the carbon driveshaft has to go, replaced with an “M-specific, high-performance” unit made from good ol’ steel.

The change will take place from November, but BMW says the M4 CS and M4 GTS versions will continue to be fitted with the carbon driveshaft. BMW also says the design team will make every effort to ensure handling is not affected by the switch to steel.

BMW is actually getting in early with the change, as a PPF won’t be required for some time, but the carmaker believes that plenty of lead-in time will be required for a smooth transition along with production line.
