There won’t be an exclusive ‘high-end’ supercar at your local BMW dealer, at least not for the foreseeable future.
Persistent rumours concerning a production version of the enormously popular Hommage concept car have been equally persistently scotched by Matt Russell, the product manager for BMW’s North American M Division.
In a recent interview with enthusiast site egmCarTech, Russell confirmed that the possibility of an M Division-developed, Audi R8-challenging supercar, had been discussed.
“Ultimately, we didn’t feel the need to make a very exclusive high-end supercar and we still don’t," Russell said.
I already firmly believe that we produce supercars, except that they’re two in one: an executive car with supercar performance. They are the essence of BMW M cars."
Russell went on to say that the E92 M3 is virtually line-ball with the Audi R8 on all the important performance metrics, such as braking, lateral G production and acceleration (they're within 0.2 seconds of each other to 100km/h).
Rather than developing an R8 challenger, BMW is focusing on the future and the development of its i8 hybrid sports car, which is expected to debut in 2014.
