BMW has confirmed it will unveil the production version of its new i3 city car on July 29, exactly two years since it first appeared in concept form.

The news follows the surfacing of new patent application images yesterday that revealed what is likely to be the final market design for the diminutive hatch.

While a shadowy teaser is all that BMW has offered today, this week's patent images point to a toned-down merging of the original i3 concept's design with the more recent i3 Concept Coupe

The i3 will be offered in two forms, one driven by an electric powertrain alone, the other getting a small range-extending petrol engine sourced from BMW's motorcycle arm.

Further details are still to be revealed, although it is understood that the i3 will debut with a price-tag in the neighbourhood of BMW's larger 3 Series range.

In Australia, with Nissan's Leaf priced close to $40,000 and the Holden Volt at $60,000, we could expect the i3 to land closer to $70,000.

Watch for more to be revealed next month.
