A new model to flesh out BMW’s green ‘i’ range has long been rumoured, and company CEO Harald Krueger has reportedly fanned those flames this week.

Speaking with German press, Mr Krueger said that the ‘numbers’ add up for a third i variant to sit between the current i3 and i8 models.

The idea of an ‘i5’ model has been floated for some time, with a recent report suggesting a long-wheelbase sedan aimed at the Chinese market will wear the badge as soon as 2018.

The sedan could be based on the regular 5 Series, and an early preview of some i5 tech may have already been offered up by BMW in its 5 Series GT eDrive PHEV prototype (pictured).

"There is space [for a new i model] if you look at it from the number point of view," Krueger said, speaking with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.
