BMW has confirmed it will reveal a new concept in its coming 'i' range at next week's LA Auto Show - but it has revealed little else.

For now, the carmaker has divulged only that the new i concept will join the existing i3 electric hatch and i8 hybrid coupe, although it is unclear which powertrain the car will use.

Reports earlier this month suggest BMW could unveil the rumoured i4, believed to be a coupe-like companion to the i3, utilising the same platform and electric drive system.

In concept form, the rear-wheel-drive i3's output is listed at 125kW and 250Nm of torque, with power transferred through a single-speed transmission.

BMW promises a 0-60km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a 0-100km/h run of 7.9 seconds - quite spritely for a city car.

The carmaker says i3 owners - likely to be primarily urban dwellers - can expect to get between 130 to 160km from one charge.

Reports in Germany have also pointed to a new 'i5' model, rumoured to be a range-extended people-mover.

It is reported that power for the i5 will come from a 125kW electric motor mounted at the rear axle, mated to a small 65kW three-cylinder petrol engine that would act as a range extender.

Whatever BMW is planning for LA, keep an eye on TMR next week for all the details.
