The i3 finally made its debut last month in London, New York and Beijing, and its the carmaker's home turf that will host the fast i8 coupe's unveiling.
BMW has yet to confirm the i8's production specification, but if the i3's debut offers a hint, the coupe's production details won't differ wildly from the original showcar.
As a concept, the i8 is powered by a plug-in hybrid arrangement that pairs a 164kW/300Nm turbocharged 1.5 litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 96kW/250Nm electric motor.
The combined system can power the front or rear wheels alone, or turn both pairs for all-wheel-drive grip. BMW also promises a 50/50 weight distribution, and a 0-100km/h sprint time below five seconds.
Green running is the key to the i8's development though, and BMW claims the i8 concept lists fuel consumption at less than 3.0 l/100km on the combined cycle.
The i8's debut in Frankfurt will be joined by the launch of a special figure-eight test track right there on BMW's display stand.
Visitors likely won't get to experience the i8 on the day, but BMW has confirmed the i3 EV will be available for tests on the track.
